The European Banking Authority (EBA) has introduced a draft framework mandating how EU banks must manage cryptoasset exposures, marking a significant stride toward regulatory clarity. Stricter capital requirements now apply to institutions holding digital assets, effectively removing uncertainty for banks hesitant to enter the crypto market.

Finalized Regulatory Technical Standards (RTS), published on 5 August 2025, standardize the calculation of cryptoasset exposures under the Capital Requirements Regulation (CRR). "The RTS ensure harmonized capital requirements across the EU," the EBA stated, aligning with Basel standards and the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework.

This MOVE establishes a unified rulebook for financial institutions, potentially accelerating institutional adoption of cryptocurrencies. The guidelines signal growing regulatory maturity, though their impact on market liquidity and bank participation remains to be seen.
